Principles

  1. The individual must learn to lead himself to maturity without undue reliance on any group, institution or established way of thinking.
  2. Physical Discipline combined with self reflection leads to the possession of a powerful will.
  3. We constantly move towards a more harmonious and loving relationship with others and self, through mastery of non-violent communication and effective boundary enforcement.
  4. The process of self evolution is the not the easy way and therefore, not for the majority of people. However, it is open and available to everyone who seeks it.
  5. All martial arts, in the beginning, are simply the science and technology of controlling the physical body of another individual against his freewill – therefore, these require the highest sense of responsibility and empathy in order to be elevated to the level of art.
  6. The greatest expression of human potential requires personal freedom.
  7. We are here to learn the true value of competition, which is humility and gratitude.
  8. The exterior world is a reflection of our own mind and the collective mind. We are here to learn to accept our experience in it’s entirety and to take full responsibility for ourselves.
  9. Intentions and thoughts powered by emotions are the cause of all action, therefore we must attend to the mastery of these in order to be successful.
  10. Patience, persistence, humility and humor are essential qualities for long term success.
  11. Our philosophy begins with the questions “what is self defense?” and “what are natural rights and responsibilities?”.
  12. The measure of effective self defense lies in our understanding or lack of, how to avoid or control those forces that would harm us. True self defense is the daily process of learning to balance Respectfulness and Assertiveness and reconcile natural rights and responsibilities.
  13. All methods, curriculums, languages, communications and practices are imperfect and incomplete, therefore it is incumbent upon the individual to translate any teaching into his own personal art.

Conquer yourself, the world will follow – Matrix is a conceptual evolution in the discipline of self defense and the management of interpersonal conflict.

There are two important but opposing sides to this issue. First is the Right to Self Defense, that is, your right and duty to protect your physical self or another from harm at the hands of a threat. Conversely is the fact that, legally, self defense is an affirmative defense, meaning the burden of proof is on your lawyer to establish your right to have used force in a given situation. This should be of special interest to anyone who has had any type of martial arts training because they will be held to a higher standard in a court of law.

More

This training is based on the core principle that conflict management and personal defense is extremely complex and highly individual. No two people have the same strengths or weaknesses and it is incumbent upon the individual to take responsibility for developing and adapting the skills that will work for them personally according to their unique circumstances.

One of the cornerstone principles of Matrix Training is that we must learn to look for threats where we have been conditioned NOT to look for them. The beginning of this work is our own ego which is the source of our thinking, emotions and core beliefs/assumptions. The ego is the FACE we present to the public, our “persona”. The neurotic ego seeks it’s own survival above ALL else, even morality or principles. Thus, FACE – Fear, Attachment, Control and Entitlement are the driving forces for the unbalanced, conditioned ego. If we boil it down further, it is Fear which is really the root danger that we FACE. Thus, restoring balance is the only way to heal the neurotic ego and create a state of FEARLESS LIVING. Ironically, the conditioning that makes us vulnerable to threats is the fact that we refuse to accept our vulnerability.  The unbalanced ego refuses to acknowledge or accept the harsh conditions of life in it’s never ending desire to feel safe. Things change, life is unfair, pain is always looming and we are alone. The unhealthy ego lacks the humility to accept these truths and is even more vulnerable because of it.

The ego craves control and fears change so it clings to its perspective and its FALSE ASSUMPTIONS about life. The unbalanced ego does not want anything to change, even its own limiting beliefs. The healthy, balanced ego, on the other hand, humbly accepts its vulnerability in the FACE of life. As a result, the well balanced individual is able to increase his/her self knowledge and self awareness (Internal) which leads to a reduction of fear and greater protection from (External) threats. This knowledge leads to an increase in confidence which leads to greater freedom from fear and an ever stronger protection from external threats. The trick is that the confidence must be based in knowledge that is true, correct and directly verifiable. Since the biggest external threat is from other people, martial arts, especially grappling arts, provide a way to attain “knowledge” that is true, correct and directly verifiable.

RFLX Matrix™ Training holds that the art of true self defense must include “concepts” and “philosophy”, in addition to physical techniques, that lead the practitioner to Real Knowledge and Awareness (Internal and External). Knowledge and philosophy lead to Understanding which leads to Wisdom (right action). Real Knowledge will inevitably lead the individual to greater happiness, satisfaction and true self defense because it leads to a deepening of relationships. Since there is a “relationship” between you and everyone you come in contact with, a deeper understanding of “relationship” will benefit you immensely. Since there is conflict to some degree in every relationship, developing the skill sets to manage conflict will benefit you immensely. Martial arts are about the managing of conflict in physical relationships. RFLX Matrix awareness is about managing conflict across the spectrum of human relationships beginning with our “relationship” with our own consciousness. This philosophy acknowledges that physical conflict is the end result of a lack of awareness.

The cultivation of a healthy ego depends upon maintaining a proper balance between opposing principles. RFLX Matrix begins with the understanding that true self defense lies in the balance between Respectfulness and Assertiveness. That is in the balance between left brain/right brain, logic/intuition, too soft/too hard, Right of Self Defense/Responsibility to protect others, Sacred Masculine/Sacred Feminine, skepticism/open mindedness, resisting/yielding, winning/learning, growth/safety. A person’s ego is surrounded by archetypes that are in polar opposite relationships and he/she must work toward the reconciliation of these paradoxical forces in order to mature into a high functioning individual and realize his/her potential as a human being. Part of the Matrix training involves the cultivation of what we have termed “Happiness Reflexes™” – that is, the development of awareness, understanding and habitual action (behavior technology) that leads to a more perfect balance of the components of the individual psyche.

RFLX Matrix™ Training puts principles first. The overriding premise is that it is the Responsibility of each individual to discover and develop a self defense strategy which they can fully “embody”. In order to actually attain this, we must FIRST gather knowledge through a disciplined study of information from a wide variety of sources. SECOND we must use our own faculties of logic and discernment to make sense and understand the truth of the information we have gathered and discard the false information. FINALLY we must use (embody) the understanding that we have gained through correct thinking and action. Principles MUST come first before anything else, even survival. When a person learns to rely on herself first and foremost, above ANY EXTERNAL AUTHORITY then true self defense is attained.

We are located in beautiful Boulder, Colorado. When we are not on the mat you’ll find us outdoors enjoying the mountains reconnecting with nature and creating peace and balance.
